My Dad gave me a large painter’s canvas tarp.
I feel like so many of my sewing projects begin with, “My Dad gave me…” Should I blame him for encouraging my sewing obsession? Or blame my genes which fret about huge swathes of free fabric until my hands get busy making something with it? Or blame myself for getting a kick out of doing things like sewing art smocks from a painter’s tarp?
Anyways. I suppose it doesn’t matter because my Dad did give it to me and my head did immediately decide that painter’s canvas would be just the thing for matching art smocks for the kids. What better than painter’s canvas to block art messes from clothing?
I turned to my trusty Oliver + S: Little Things to Sew and used the art smock pattern. Oh how I love her patterns! They’re classic and well constructed and have all these wonderful details that turn sewing projects into heirlooms. These smocks are constructed with french seams so the insides are beautifully finished. Which is good because this fabric frays horribly. And there are at least half a dozen other ways she’s designed the pattern to make these smocks utterly charming. Well I think they’re utterly charming. The smocks…and the models.

These are delightful! I love them! (And the models are cuties too).
I love sewing… this might have to be a future project. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks. I really enjoyed sewing these. Definitely recommend the pattern.
So, I love this. I love that they are made out of a paint tarp. I love the little pockets and I love that your Dad gets you and feeds your obsession.
Yes. He does, really. I’m fond of the pockets too. I debated putting them on but I’m glad I did.
Oooo, I agree, utterly charming, all of it!
Thanks!
I love them, and I happen to have some of that canvas tarp in my craft cupboard…hmmmm :)
Ah yes, I encourage you to turn it into a smock!
I love the smocks, they are so cute! What a great way to make use of such a nice hand-me-down gift and matching things are always cute :)
I so rarely do the matching thing but it sure is fun now and again.
Cuteness overload! And such a great use for painters canvas! I’ve really got to get that book!
It’s the best sewing book for the money that I own. Every pattern is so professional and turns out great. I’m tempted to just work my way through the entire book.
Love these smocks! But I’m writing to say that I really love that you’re offering placenta encapsulation. Not enough women know about this treasure, produced by their own bodies. So happy to see it, in bold, at the top of your blog.
Thanks, Lisa. I’m very happy to be able to offer it. So many amazing benefits!
perfect use for the material!!! Audrey and Grey are being very very neat with their painting, though—love the decorated chair, too!!!
Yes. Neat with the art smocks ironically. Not so neat with the chair ;)
gorgeous, the smocks and the models. i simply love oliver + s patterns, they are such a delight to use. i really must buy that book!
